Biography

Dr. Michael J. Rensing is one of North America's foremost experts on low-carbon fuel policy and compliance markets. From 2008 to 2022 he served as Executive Director and Director of the Low Carbon Fuels Branch within the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, where he was the primary architect and strategic lead of British Columbia's Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).

Under his leadership, the BC LCFS matured into one of the most successful performance-based clean fuel programs in North America — driving meaningful reductions in transportation-sector greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the growth of a competitive low-carbon fuels market.

His work has spanned regulatory design, policy implementation, lifecycle analysis, market mechanisms, credit creation and trading, and engagement with industry, Indigenous partners, and other jurisdictions. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Victoria and was awarded the 2021 BC Bioenergy Network Sector Champion Award.

In late 2022 he founded MJ Rensing Consulting Inc., advising clients across Canada and the United States on low-carbon fuel standards, emerging compliance markets, lifecycle analysis, and decarbonization strategy. He continues to support thought leadership through publications, conference participation, and senior advisory roles with leading clean-fuels organizations.
